The CPCI 720 series
is an enhanced version of the popular CPCI 800 adapter, featuring improved architecture
and support for wire-speed performance with small packets. The CPCI 720 series
is available as a single or dual port HSSI, DS3, or E3 WAN adapter for demanding
video and multimedia networking applications. The CPCI 720
is based on a 32-bit 33 MHz PCI controller that supports bus mastering at a burst
rate of 132 MB per second. The main components of the CPCI 720 include the Intel
i960HD66 RISC processor, the PCI controller, and two DXI HDLC controllers. The
i960 processor manages packet flow between the DXI controller, packet RAM and
host RAM. The i960 can act as a PCI bus master with direct access to host RAM,
or it can initiate DMA transfers between packet RAM and host buffers via the PCI
controller. The VLSI DXI controller module supports both HDLC and transparent
modes of operation at speeds of up to 52 Mbps per port. Dual 8/16 KB FIFOs are
connected directly to the DXI HDLC controller for both transmit and receive channels
to minimize packet transfer latencies.
